Small Business Saturday began in 2010 to encourage holiday shoppers to visit local brick and mortar stores the day after supporting big box retailers on Black Friday. This year, American Express and small businesses made sure consumers shopped small on November 29th, but the support didn’t stop there. Small Business Saturday has grown so much over the past few years that now large companies are supporting the #ShopSmall movement through Twitter. In fact, in the 5th ever #SmallBizSaturday, 446 companies signed up to be official supporters of the day dedicated to support local and smaller businesses within our communities.
Companies weren’t the only groups getting involved in promoting Small Business Saturday this year either. Advocacy groups, local neighborhood groups, and political officials stepped up to promote the day and create events for shoppers to get out and spread the word for 2014. Due to all of the effort and support across the nation, over 2/3 of Americans were aware of the day and 88 million consumers shopped small.
Despite all of the promotion, many small businesses took to their social media outlets to promote Shop Small via videos, pictures, posting coupons and deals for the day, and offering incentives for consumers to come to their store.
